some people just get a shit draw from life from the moment they're born. sometimes families as a whole are prime examples how little god really fucking cares about the bottom feeders of society. that's the gleesons. chance was the first of seven born from alcoholic parents who started reproducing when they were only fourteen, and since the age of comprehension, he's been looking out for his siblings in an effort to make sure they not only survive but get something more out of life than the hand they were dealt. food on the table? bills paid? that's been chance's responsibility since the age of ten, when he started taking odd jobs around the town of denham springs. paper delivery, drug dealing, construction, pool cleaning, bussing tables, cleaning dishes, grocery bagger, prostitution through scamming bored and lonely housewives, theft and whatever else it took to bring a steady amount of money into the household as the number of mouths to feed expanded.
miraculously, chance was able to finish high school and received a scholarship to attend lousiana state university, but he was only able to attend a semester before a drug bust sent his mother to the state pen under a ten year indictment for making and selling meth as well as child endangerment, theft and destruction of property. after his father bailed to avoid similar charges, chance had no choice but to drop out of college to focus full time on raising his siblings. it was back to the odd jobs, mostly being a bully for hire, and his dreams of getting out of the dump of denham and moving on with his life were buried and forgotten. at nineteen, knocking up a stripper friend he'd been close to became the final nail in the coffin for any hope of a better life and chance accepted his fate, going down the same path as his parents with the bottle and reckless behavior.
though his mother didn't serve her full sentence, by the time she got out of prison, chance already had the household under control. he refused to let her back in and told both his parents if they challenged his authority, he would fight for custody of his siblings. they backed down and chance has been head of house ever since.
chance tried made the best of his predicament by making a name for himself in the neighborhood. people knew he could be counted on to take care of the things they didn't want to handle such as solving their civil disputes with a bit of persuasion. he learned to network the underground near baton rouge and became a connection to the best drugs and black market items in the bayou. but, beyond the morally grey area in which he works, he's also considered to be the person to go to when someone really needs help, a shoulder to lean on, or ears to listen.
